JAMPRO Hosts UK Ministers to Explore Energy Sector and Investment Opportunities

The Jamaica Promotions Corporation (JAMPRO) has hosted a UK delegation of Parliamentary Ministers for an inward mission from the United Kingdom to explore opportunities to boost Jamaica’s energy sector. The week-long mission, which began on April 3, 2017, focused on investigating Jamaica’s progress in transitioning towards renewable energy alternatives, and the potential for technological transfer.

The mission was hosted with the support of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association and the UK government’s All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for Jamaica, a body that examines issues related to the country. The APPG for Jamaica aims to support the Jamaican Government in decreasing their overall reliance on fossil fuels and in transitioning towards lower carbon growth.  The delegation included Dawn Butler, MP and Chair of the APPG, Kate Osamor, MP and APPG member and David Mackintosh, MP and APPG member. Baroness Sandip Verma, Chairman of Lords European External Affairs Committee and past Minister for the Department of International Development, also came to Jamaica to explore investment opportunities.

MP Dawn Butler, who is a member of Jamaica’s Diaspora and is the first African-Caribbean woman to become a Government Minister in the UK, said she believed that there was much potential for growth in the country’s energy sector. Ms. Butler said, “This inward mission comes at an important time when the UK is redefining its special relationship with the Commonwealth. Jamaica is the largest Caribbean island in CARICOM, and therefore plays a fundamental role in ensuring that the renewable sector in the Caribbean is the most advanced in the world. I hope that Jamaica and the UK will together form workable and sustainable partnerships to help develop the sector be it through technology transfer, training and business. I would like to thank the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA UK) for making this mission possible and JAMPRO for providing the secretariat to the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) to Jamaica. I am sure that working together, we will achieve amazing results.”

Laurence Jones, European Regional Manager at JAMPRO noted that the Agency was working directly with parliamentary groups in the United Kingdom to attract investment opportunities to Jamaica, and that the UK inward mission exemplified the growing interest in Jamaica’s economic development. He said, “JAMPRO’s European Office houses the APPG’s Secretariat, and with this opportunity, we have been working directly with Ministers and Parliamentary groups to ensure that opportunities for Jamaica, whether through trade or investment, are part of the conversation with the aim of leading to action.” Mr. Jones explained that the strong ties between Jamaica and the United Kingdom creates an atmosphere of co-operation, and that JAMPRO was working to replicate this relationship across Europe to attract more trade and investments to Jamaica.

The APPG for Jamaica is chaired by Dawn Butler, MP and is made up of 15 other members of parliament from the Labour, Conservative and Liberal-Democrat parties. JAMPRO is Secretariat of the APPG, and guides the APPG’s agenda. JAMPRO is an Agency of the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation.
