Fashion

With the abundance of creative talent, the strength of ‘Brand Jamaica’ and the staging of widely successful Caribbean fashion events, Jamaica is poised to claim a significant portion of the ever increasing global fashion market.

Despite being a relatively young industry, Caribbean fashion is conservatively estimated to be worth US$110 million, and Jamaica holds pride of place as the nucleus of this promising industry. This island’s fashion industry is characterised by the production and design of apparel, jewellery and accessories, retail sales, as well as modelling. The local fashion calendar boasts two major events – Style Week Jamaica produced by Saint International and Caribbean Fashion Week, the signature event of the Pulse Entertainment Group. Jamaica’s fashion industry has benefitted tremendously from these events, which provide effective avenues for local designers and models to gain exposure on the regional and international scale.

In support of the industry, institutions such as the Edna Manley College of Visual and Performing Arts (EMC) as well as the Garmex HEART Academy are offering programmes in design construction, fashion drawing, collection development and jewellery making. With the establishment of additional training facilities and formation of further strategic partnerships, Jamaican’s fashion industry has the potential to generate substantial revenues, provide jobs and create linkages that will multiply throughout the domestic economy.
