Jamaica, with its rich history, rustic countryside, majestic mountains, secluded coves, mysterious caves, mini-jungles, historic sites and captivating waterfalls, has been a premier location for film projects since the early 1900s. Hollywood movies such as Dr. No from the James Bond franchise, How Stella Got Her Groove Back, Cocktail, Instinct, The Mighty Quinn, License to Wed, Legends of the Fall and Wide Sargasso Sea have been shot in Jamaica.

The Jamaica Film Commission, established as the first entity of its kind in the English-speaking Caribbean in 1984, notes that an average of 150 films projects are shot in the country each year, ranging from feature films to video shoots. Jamaica is currently enjoying a golden period marked by an unprecedented number of local and foreign projects. The island was the preferred location for the filming of 19th cycle of America's Next Top Model (ANTM), as well as documentaries and music videos from stars such as Rihanna and Drake.  In the past few years, Hollywood blockbusters such as Knight and Day and A Perfect Getaway have been shot here, as well as the award-winning BBC drama Small Island.

Local production has been particularly vibrant, with award-winning featurettes and full length features such as Rise Up (Music Documentary Award at the 2009 AFI/Discovery Channel Silverdocs Festival), Coast (Best Cinematography at Portobello Film Festival 2011, Caribbean Film Corner), Better Mus’ Come (Audience Award for Best Feature Film at Bahamas International Film Festival 2011 and Best Director First Feature Award at the 2012 Pan African Film Festival) and Ghett’a Life (Hartley Merrill International Screenplay Award, Cannes Film Festival).

Beyond showcasing Jamaica’s attractiveness and capacity to host major projects, these cinematic works also serve to bring aspects of Jamaica’s culture such as music, dance and fashion to global audiences, while reinforcing the strong link between film and other industries.
