The creative industries are those sectors that are born out of individual creativity, skill and talent and have the potential for wealth and job creation through the generation and exploitation of intellectual property. Chief among the core areas encompassed by the creative industries are film, music, fashion and sports.

The creative industries represent a key growth sector, contributing approximately 5% to national gross domestic product (GDP) and generating between US$ 15 and 20 million in revenues annually based on figures from the Creative Economy Report 2010 by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). The creative sector is the third largest contributor to GDP, and has a significant multiplier effect on the Jamaican economy through seamless linkages with other industries such as tourism and manufacturing. In 2011, JAMPRO facilitated projects that created over 1,600 jobs for creative practitioners.
