Cocoa

Cocoa

Jamaican cocoa fetches a premium price on the world market, and the country is recognised by the International Cocoa Association (ICCO) as one of nine exclusive producers of “fine or flavour” cocoa. There is great demand for this product, with a guaranteed market of 1500 tonnes annually.

Cocoa trees flourish inland, in the highlands of the parishes of Clarendon, St. Mary, St. Catherine, St. Andrew and Portland. Most of the finished dry beans are exported to chocolatiers in countries such as Switzerland, France, UK and US. Jamaican cocoa is often used to improve the flavour of cocoa from other countries.

There are many value-added products derived from cocoa, such as:

  • Gourmet chocolates
  • Fruit conserves
  • Coffee beans dipped in chocolate
  • Rum-flavoured chocolate
